Here is a video that I shared with my seventh graders, who are learning about perspective. The artist/teacher is Merrill Kazanjain, explains perspective in a fun way.
THE HOW-TO GUIDE for GRAPHIC NOVELS for Mrs. Benson's Seventh Gr.
"What is a GRAPHIC NOVEL?" you might be asking. It's a story done in a comic strip style. It's sequential art, (TBA = Time Based Art. I taught this simple concept to last year's seventh graders. Here's a link- view how each rotation evolved: http://mrsninabenson2013-14.weebly.com/seventh.html). TBA/sequential art means that there is an order to the art work. Do you see the little word in sequential that means order? That's right! SEQUENCE.
You can also think of graphic novels like books on tape. You get to learn and/or enjoy a variety of books in a fun and different way. Books on tape allow you the freedom of listening to a story. So guess what; all those "Peanuts" comic strips, by Charles Schultz, that you've enjoyed; some could be considered graphic novels! Remember how they told a story?

In this example Mr. Schultz introduces the character Franklin,.... and remember all those super hero comics - graphic novels!
Stories usually have complex plots, not single "cell" thoughts. A cell in a comic strip and in a graphic novel, will tell a thought; a one liner. However, combine many, many, many cells together - to get your point across, and you just may have a graphic novel.

Think of books that you've read that could have been graphic novels. Do you think the book would have been more interesting if they were graphic novels? Why or why not? There are many types of graphic novel styles: Manga/anime, superhero story, (the first two are very popular); human interest, adaptations and/or spinoffs, satire, and non-fiction.
The Youtube video below, although, somewhat of a commercial has great information about what elements go into the making of a graphic novel. Enjoy.
Finally, what follows now are some examples of what others have accomplished.
